- Keynotes:

- Adam Miller, CEO of Cornerstone OnDemand, described building Cornerstone in LA to a 

publicly traded company. He described the four Ps of entrepreneurship: People, Passion, Persistence, and Place, mentioning LA is a good place for startups thanks to its weather, and less next-big-thing bandwagon-jumping and less developer pilfering than the Bay Area. NextWeb article.  

 

- Nely Galan, former president of Telemundo and head of Galan Enterprises, gave an inspiring speech describing how she achieved her accomplishments in media and entertainment and real estate. "Buy buildings, not shoes," she said.

  

- Mark Suster of GRP Partners described entrepreneurship as hard work, but with a good idea and persistence, you can get it done.

 

PANELS

Growing Your Audience.  Speakers discussed tips for digital content creators to increase their views, subscribers, and social media engagement. Tips: be authentic, connect with your audience by asking them for input. Speakers included: Yury Polnar of YouTube audience development, Tim Glenn of Ally Digital / SMOSH, which recently surpassed more than 1B subscribers, Oren Katzeff of ZEFR, award-winning Shira Lazar of What's Trending, and YouTubers Olga Kay and Kevin Lieber Vsauce2, moderated by NewMedia Rockstars founder Benny Luo.

 

Startup Secrets: Tips and Advice.  Investors and legal described what they are really looking for in startups: good idea, passion, persistence.  Thanks speakers David Carter of Amplify, Jamie Kantrowitz of Launhpad LA, Dan Burnham of Latham and Watkins, Jon Bassett of DFJ Frontier, moderated by Rishi Roongta of New World Ventures. 

 

 

Social TV and Second Screen.  Speakers discussed ways that social media and second screen can be used to increase engagement with TV shows both during the show and between episodes and seasons. Tools include: social media / on air events, cast tweeting during the show, check-in incentives, and more.  Speakers included: Danielle Mullin of ABC Family (award winning social media Pretty Little Liars), Sean Besser of GetGlue, Robin Bentley of FOX Broadcasting, Aaron Williams of Social Samba, moderated by Lori Schwartz, World of Schwartz.

 

Fashion Goes Digital and Social.  Speakers from fashion startups and companies shared how they use digital and social media in new ways to sell fashion clothing, engage fashionistas, and partner with brands and celebs.  Tips: Fashion photos and aspirational images work well, partner with celebs and branding where there is a good natural fit.  Speakers include moderator: Allison Beal of StyleSaint, Corrine Crockett of BeachMint, Alisa Gould-Simon of Pose, Ashley Torres of HauteLook, Jeff Biesman, of Little Black Bag, David Beveridge of Shoedazzle, and
Diana De Leon of Free People at Santa Monica Place.

 

Making Your Story Stick: Crafting a Compelling Brand Narrative.  Speakers discussed how to use your products, data, stats, and news to craft a meaningful story for your company, new releases, etc.  Secrets: find emotional connections or timely relevance for your startup or project, connect with the right audiences online with content that resonates. Speakers include moderator Amanda Coolong of TechZulu, Renee Topper of Write Click Here, Micah Baldwin of Graphicly, and AdaPia d'Errico brand specialist. There were so many good tweets from this panel w the #SBF hashtag, that it attracted people to leave other panels to attend midway thru!

 

  Women Developers panel featured women developers discussing issues of women in tech, how they got into tech, and increasing women representation at hackathons, tech events, and more. Moderated by Tara Tiger Brown, with developers from LA to SF including: Rachel Blum of Google, Angie Chang of Hackbright Academy, Shirley Lin of 800 Birds, Amy Hee Kim of USC Women in Engineering Program, Sophia Viklund of BackCode.

 

 

- EdTech from STEM to STEAM featured panelists discussing art tech startups and other educational tech programs to increase children learning.  Speakers included moderator Evonne Heyning of EDDEFY, Tina Hoover of Brainrush, Brent Bushnell of Two Bit Circus, Teresa Gozney and Tara Brown of LA Makerspace.

 

- Gov - I Just Want It Fixed featured Kurt Daradics of Esri discussing how government use of big data and apps can increase civic engagemetn.

 

PARTIES

SBF includes lots of cocktails and parties for networking and helping facilitate handshaking-deals getting done.  

  

- Opening Party by Demand Media at the Viceroy. Hundreds packed the outdoor pool patio at the Viceroy, with energy in the seaside air for the start of the conference. Demand Media offered free Demand Media cupcakes at its cabana, and hosted a VIP pre-cocktails as well. KCRW DJ Raul Campos got the groove on poolside, as attendees checked out the KCRW iPad listenting stations at the KCRW cabana.

  

- Thursday Night Siemers / Cooley VIP Party packed the rooftop of Siemers to capacity with a band and taco car. Cooley offered amazing views and more networking

  

- Friday Night Party presented by Cornerstone OnDemand transformed Cross Campus into a club with open bar, free food, and VIP area. Features include Cornerstone OnDemand's interactive video grafitti wall, payvia's table, flashing Cross Campus Xs, light-up clothing by Illuminode, digital art installations curated by Create:Fixate, and the TaskUs photo booth where attendees could take fun photos.  

  

- Closing Party by Media Temple featured a dance performance with balls and hulu hoops by LA Follies, tarot card readers and fortune tellers. OTHER FEST FUN 

  

- Beach Games.  We rallied SBF attendees to network while playing basketball in Venice, surfing in Manhattan Beach, SoulCycle near Third St. Promenade, and volleyball on Santa Monica Beach.  Our volleyball Team Silicon Spikers ranked second in the Vilebrequin games

  

- TechZulu Penthouse. Efren Toscano and Amanda Coolong did dozens of interviews with speakers and attendees from the ROC roof deck with sun and palm trees in the background. Other highlights include Fireman's Brew offering free beverages, and Callfire's Sprinkles f

ree cupcakes on Thursday and surprise free ice cream at the Sprinkles Ice Cream cart on Friday.  ChargeAll offered free charging stations so busy tweeters could get a charge boost while chatting in the sun.

  

  

-The TriNet food taco truck provided freebreakfast, lunch and dinner at ROC and Cross Campus. Thanks TriNet!

HOLLYWOOD - We had a REDiculously fun time dressing up in red for our Red Party at the Redbury in Hollywood! Attendees from NBC, Universal, startup CEOs and CTOs, singers, app developers, web series actors and more mixed and mingled.

Digital LA - Silicon Beach @ Cannes Beach panel

CANNES - Our Silicon Beach at Cannes Beach panel featured LA startup FilmBreak and a filmmaker making a documentary about LA startup Enplug, at Nikki Beach on Cannes Beach during the Cannes Film Fest.  Check the PICs.

Speakers included:Darren Marble, CEO of FilmBreak, and Vladislav Pasternak, producer of Sex and Breakfast, one of this year's short films in the Cannes Film Festival. The film was written and directed by Victoria Kashtan, who was a photographer for our Silicon Beach Fest Hollywood. Victoria and Vlad also created the documentary film Notes of a Freshman, featuring the story of LA-based startup Enplug (StartEngine accelerator alum). 

We also traded notes on best films, yacht parties, beach parties, and chateau parties with LA peeps and attendees from New York, London, Russia and Singapore.

SANTA MONICA -  Moms are using digital to become "mompreneurs," going beyond blogging and consuming online content, to creating startups and apps, said panelists at our Digital LA - Digital Moms panel. Many moms, realizing gaps in products and services for moms, are becoming mom entrepreneurs by creating sites apps, entertainment content, and online products, panelists said at our pre-Mother's Day panel at ROC Santa Monica. Digital LA - British Boris Breakfast: Google Hangout

 

SANTA MONICA -  We hosted LA's first-ever three-way Google hangout with the Mayor of London Boris Johnson and LA and Silicon Valley VCs during BritWeek in LA.  LA VCs Mark Terbeek of Greycroft Partners,and Ivan Nikkhoo and Jennifer Andreson of Siemer & Associates described Silicon Beach at the livechat with Boris Johnson live from the InnoTech Summit in London, and VCs in Silicon Valley.   Thanks to BritWeek, UKTI LA, and Production Beast, as well as InnoTech Summit.

Digital LA - Games Marketing Panel (San Francisco)

SAN FRANCISCO - Game industry experts from Square Enix, agencies, and mobile app companies share tips on console and mobile app game marketing at our Digital LA - Game Marketing panel at Orange Silicon Valley in downtown San Francisco during GDC. Both console games and mobile apps use different strategies, and sometimes can learn from each other. PICS.  

Digital LA - Social Gov: Tweetbank for Eric Garcetti

HOLLYWOOD - Digital LA spearheaded LA's first ever Tweetbank to rally support for LA mayoral candidate Eric Garcetti at WeWork Labs in Hollywood. Attendees used social media - Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Vine, LinkedIn, G+ and more to persuade friends and followers to pledge their vote of support for Eric Garcetti in the mayoral race May 21. See PICS.

Eric Garcetti, LA mayoral candidate, opened the day with a forum "What LA City Can Do For LA Tech." This was the first time a mayoral candidate has asked LA's tech community what the City of Los Angeles can do to help support entrepreneurs.  Article.
