Here's everything you need to know.
Beyond spinning, I was pretty pumped to discover all the *other* classes available in the app. There are yoga, Pilates, and barre classes. There are strength-training classes and boot camps. There are even five-minute cardio classes for the whole fam. Also? I love how they include meditation, because I was able to cancel a different app I've been paying for. Woo!
Yup, I'll say it again: You don't actually need any Peloton equipment to use the app. You can queue up the cycling or running classes on your phone, laptop or desktop, or even TV — then just use a regular stationary bike or treadmill. You might not get all the nifty little metrics that go along with it, but it still works really effectively. (Or opt for no- or low-equipment classes, like dance cardio, bodyweight, or yoga.)
If you're thinking about giving the app a try, Peloton is offering a free 60-day trial for the month of January. (That's twice as long as their normal free trial, which is 30 days.) After that, a digital membership is $12.99 a month.
If you're on a tight schedule you don't want to waste time trying to pick a class! Stretch, clip in, go to your bookmarked rides, and get it done. Year of Yes ride? Yes, indeed.
One wise Redditor also recommended having a "comfort ride" to take on the days when you just need something familiar. I love that idea!
If you're distracted by the leaderboard or clock watching (guilty as charged), just double-tap the screen and ta-dah! It's all gone. Just you, the bike, and the instructor. You can also choose keep certain metrics and hide some of the others, because maybe you really DO need to see how much time is left in the class.
Just want to listen to the music? Crank it up! You can adjust the volume of the instructor and vice versa. It's just another way to customize exactly what you want. You'll find this feature pop up when you hit the volume buttons on the side of the bike tablet. Or, check out the tutorial on the Peloton website.
Yeah, you're definitely going to feel it that first week. And maybe the second. Okay, some of the third, too. What literally everyone says is true though: It gets better!
But if you'd like a little extra padding for the seat, reviewers give this bike seat really good reviews. Get it on Amazon for $21.99.
I actually bought this for my daughter's stroller during the hot summer months and now I'm loving it for the bike. She can have it back... when the weather is warm again.
Snag this fan on Amazon for $21.99.
Dreaming of adding some more stamps to your passport? Yeah, me too. The day after a tough ride (thanks, Olivia! 😘) I knew I wanted to get back on the bike but needed something low key. So I listened to an audiobook while cycling through the French Alps. It was lovely.
On the bike tablet, type "scenic ride" into the search bar and all the options will pop up!
It's not just about giving high fives to rando people on the leaderboard. You can find people who share your interests by adding hashtags to your profile, following the Reddit community, or joining different Facebook groups.
I found this very impressive and pretty comprehensive list of groups to join and there is literally something for everyone on it!
Find your IRL friends and family and follow them for extra accountability! My brother lives on the other side of the country and this is just one more way we stay connected now.
Another benefit of finding out which of your friends have a Peloton? You can obsessively talk about Peloton without annoying your non-Peloton friends. It's a thing. Just try to keep it in check, okay?!
Go to your profile and click Find Members to do some searching.
If you join the same class as one of your friends, you can actually use the camera on the bike tablet to chat. Not sure about you, but I'll be reserving this for family and best friend-status humans only because if being on Zoom non-stop for a year has taught us anything this year it's that we all know that angle is ROUGH.
Find detailed instructions here.
You need to hydrate! So save the water holders for the good stuff and put your phone and headphones case on this easy-to-install tray. There are lots of great options out there, but I chose this one because I can easily look down and check on the sleeping baby during my ride.
Find it on Amazon for $15.99.
This no-fuss attachment hangs right below the weights on the bike. Also, true story: After finishing my first ride, I had to leave one of my shoes clipped in to the bike and came back to handle the situation after dinner. But after just one week, I was clipping in and clipping out like an old pro. 🙌Why is that noise so gratifying??
Find it on Amazon for $14.99.
Alas, we can't all have our bikes next to dreamy floor-to-ceiling windows with scenic views. (I ride in the basement next to our overflow bookshelf and a pressure washer. 😂) But adding a cute shelf for your shoes and other accessories will keep your space nice and zen!
Get this handmade shelf from SweetTeaAndSparklers on Etsy for $179.99+.
It has everything from crop tops to mom gear to baby onesies.
Get the Peloton x Adidas crop top for $70, or the Peloton Mom tank top for $48.
Putting stickers on the bike gives me some serious gold-star-chore-chart vibes and I am not mad about it.
Get these milestone stickers from VinylTrendsbyKelsey on Etsy for $12.
Once you've mastered the on-demand rides, start adding the live rides to your routine. You just get a different energy when you know it's happening live. Treat the live rides like you would any IRL scheduled class. Sign up, get there a little early to stretch, and then go for it. Bonus: you don't have the awkwardness of staking out your spot in the locker room like you would in a real studio.
If you're looking for that coveted instructor shoutout, Reddit's Peloton Wiki has some tips! The top three: Take a live ride on your birthday or a milestone day, have a username that is easy to pronounce, and go for classes that have fewer live participants in them.
It doesn't matter what your motivations are for getting a Peloton (for example, perhaps, like me, you took up stress baking during a global pandemic). You made a commitment to yourself and that takes hard work.
You'll get badges in your profile for your milestones in each category (cycling, running, walking, Tread bootcamp, bike bootcamp, strength, stretching, yoga, meditation, and cardio). You'll get badges for completing daily and weekly streaks, as well as participating in special challenges and special events. They're nice reminders of the work you've put in.
For whenever we can all travel safely again, Peloton's website has a list of hotels across the U.S. (and abroad!) that have bikes. If you use this to plan your travel that is some serious commitment, but you have my R-E-S-P-E-C-T.
Search the list here.
