If you found yourself marooned on a deserted island, and you could summon one character from Sesame Street, who would it be?

Seems like an innocent question, but one that took an intense turn when posed by the beloved children's program on Twitter.

Sesame Street's social media team put forward the hypothetical, "You’re stuck on a deserted island and you can pick one of these Sesame Street friends to come with you. Who are you picking and why?" and presented the choices of Grover, Cookie Monster, Oscar the Grouch and Elmo.

Many jumped to champion their favourite on the platform, including director Joss Whedon and actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt, laying out intense logic for their chosen island companion, starting with everyone's perpetually enthused friend, Elmo.

Some preferred to hang out with the biggest trash-talker around.

Even though you all know who'd inhale any food you'd both manage to scrounge up on the island, Cookie Monster had some strong, albeit macabre campaigners.

But Team Grover truly stepped up to the plate, with a significant amount of island-bound folks choosing to take the loveable blue monster with them.

Even a smug Grover weighed in.

There was one furry friend y'all forgot, who lives far from Sesame Street but deserves consideration.

Oh, make that two forgotten furry friends.

Who would you pick?
